Host Alex Kensington writes:

Well here it is the last show of season two in the New Shmaltz Series’. I want to thank all the guests so far on Conjurers, Carnies and Collectors. The NPC team has had a lot of fun on our travels seeking out entertainers and giving them a chance to talk about the business in a frank and candid way.

All have been really generous with their time. Folks such as Magician Thom Barnett of Toronto, David Parr of Chicago, Professor Sprocket of Washington DC, Eric Henning of Baltimore, Bev Bergeron of Orlando, Ken Silkie AKA Bob Da Vinci of St. Petersburg, The Bunnies in Peril Duo: magicians James Songster & Joe Vecciarelli of Orlando, DB Doghouse of Showhistory.Com, Spook show producer Roy Huston of Gibsontown, Writer James Taylor of Baltimore, Mentalist Rick Maue of Pittsburgh, and Western Arts Performer Chris McDaniel of the New York City. It is a collection of talent and humanity that has touched our listeners, and well as our team. They have opened their lives and homes to the NPC microphones, some not even aware of the thousands of you listening out there on the Internet.

The support of listeners has been frankly amazing. We get a lot of e-mail, and generous feedback, our bandwidth requirements have doubled and our hosting service tells us over 6,500 have joined us during season Two.

On the last episode we announced a contest to guess the identity of the Mystery Guest who spoke in carny. I personally thought it might have been too hard a contest, but one hundred and thirty correct answers came in under the deadline.

OUR FIRST CONTEST WINNER!
The winner of a signed out of print edition of Shocked and Amazed! Volume Six< provided by writer and publisher James Taylor, is Joe Diamond of Chicago! Joe correctly guessed it was Jeff McBride speaking carny in our last episode. Photo courtesy Cook County Sheriff Dept. (not really)

The Shmaltz Mystery Guest of Season Two: Jeff McBride
Jeff McBride is a three-time award winner at the International Grand Prix of Magic in Monte Carlo, and is widely recognized as a foremost innovator and most exciting performer in contemporary magic. Naming him “Vegas’ Best Magician” several years ago, the Las Vegas Review Journal wrote: “Light years ahead of the pack..” McBride is easily the most exciting and mesmerizing magician I’ve seen in years.” For several years, McBride headlined at Caesars Magical Empire in Las Vegas, where he was voted critics’ choice as Best Magician in Las Vegas. He is also a three-time Guinness World Record holder.

Every spring, IBM Ring 50 here in Washington DC hosts Magi-Whirl, Washington’s only magic convention. Jeff McBride, as the special guest artist, spoke with me behind the scenes as he set his pitch for the stage spectacular. He worked quickly and deftly with the thin, almost weightless props, which have become heavy icons in magic. He shoved in pounds of purpose and meaning; Phoenix-like fiery energy, which as a performer and philosopher, he knew how to pack flat and show big.

Summer Shows 2009
We’re also announcing that this is the last show of season two in the New Shmaltz series, as we take off for the summer. The summer replacement show will be a series of shorter quizzes and contests, where you can win just like Joe Diamond did. The format is simple: We pose a question and a prize is awarded to whomever we randomly draw from the stack of correct answers. These topics are based on sideshow and magic knowledge, hopefully displaying that you’re with it, and know magic theory and show history.

Since showfolk are well known for putting fine points on details, celebrity judges and recognized experts will make the final (and I mean final…) decisions. Yours truly will stay out of the mix unless I am directly involved with the quiz question myself.

Prizes are supplied by our sponsors. We don’t offer cash prizes, yet. If you want cash, you’ll have to deal with your local pawnbroker. You MUST however have a legitimate US postal address, as we cannot ship overseas at this time. We do have quite a listenership in the UK and Canada and we’re working on a solution for our friends over there.

So tune in on July 8th for the Conjurers Carnies & Collectors Summer 2009 Contest Shows! Our Interview series resumes with Season Three debuting Wednesday, September 30th with more stars from the circus, magic, sideshow, and beginning next fall, Burlesque.

Host Alex Kensington writes:
I first saw silent movie footage of a Spirit Cabinet routine several years ago and was of course intrigued. The curtain was being whipped back and forth by an assistant, while the Somnambulistic Medium within was bound by ropes. Yet all sorts of miracles were occurring, object tossed about and over the cabinet’s edge when ever the curtain was drawn. No matter how fast the Assistant yanked back the curtain, The Medium was still found to be tied unmoved and unconscious. Those naughty spirits he called forth were to blame for all the hijinks. Man, it was cool…. And so is the modern practitioner Chicagoan actor and Magician David Parr.

We return again to the City of Big Shoulders, and meet David Parr, who with his partner P.T. Murphy, co-stars and produces The Magic Cabaret at the Green House Theatre Center– Chicago’s weekly presentation of magic, spiritualism and classic seance effects and a wide variety of amazing guest performers. So join me now in the lovely Lincoln Park neighborhood on Chicago’s near north side, on the tree lined streets of classic brick bungalows as we speak with Magician and Actor David Parr.

The Magic Cabaret is Wednesdays at 7:30 at the Greenhouse Theater Center 2257 North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. No one under 13 is admitted so you know its gotta be cool. Chicago Reader theater critic Kerry Reid writes: Low on hokum and high on thoughtfulness, this shows magic to its best advantage, up close and personal.

You can find show information, schedules and purchase tickets to the Magic Cabaret at www.magic-cabaret.com.

The big idea of Conjurers, Carnies & Collectors was to let show folks talk about the fun and heartaches of being a Variety Arts performer which in today’s society probably makes you really different from you next door neighbor, About 2 years ago, at a performer’s pot luck dinner party, I recorded Chris McDaniel telling tales of the western arts life. His comments and observations of the terrible cost of the performer’s life stopped the party in its tracks.

On tonight’s show Western Arts performer and singer Chris McDaniel talks with me about the great fun as well as the great cost of dedicating your life to live variety arts performance — what it gives and what it takes away. After the break, he’ll speak about his experience with “America’s Got Talent” and some thoughts on what it’s done to American audiences. We met on the road while he was making a jump to his next show.

Running Time 45:50

Conjurers, Carnies & Collectors is made possible by a grant from Shmaltz Brewing Company, makers of Coney Island Lagers, including “Sword Swallower” and “Albino Python”. Be sure to see the seasonally available brews such as “Freaktoberfeast” and “Human Blockhead”. Look for the freaks on the label at World Market, Whole Foods and fine beer retailers near you. A portion of its proceeds directly benefits Coney Island USA, a 501(c)3 Non-Profit.

And by Shocked & Amazed! Magazine, the planet’s only periodical dedicated to the novelty and variety performing arts, now in its 15th year of publication. Available at booksellers, comic book shops and fine tattoo parlours near you. Shocked & Amazed! Magazine — Ask for it by name!

Host Alex Kensington writes:
Mentalism. Every variety arts performer is enticed by it, and most magicians have or will go there. Its the difference between showing off as a deft manipulator of things, and a manipulator of thoughts– lots of them. It takes magic theory out for a real display … if you can pull it off. If you flop, you could blame the audience; if you’re great at it, you might be Rick Maue.

This week we travel from Washington, DC to Pittsburgh, PA speak with best selling magic Author and Mentalist Rick Maue.

Pittsburgh-based author lecturer and performer Rick Maue has over 30 years experience in front of audiences, and several best selling books to his credit. Probably his most famous, The Book of Haunted Magic is doing well in hard bound. His busy lecture schedule keeps him on both sides of the Atlantic and he has helped performers all over the world. Head west with us now from DC to the Iron City and meet Rick Maue.
