Running Time 1:00:01

Conjurers carnies and Collectors is made possible by a grant from Shmaltz Brewing Company Makers of the Coney Island Craft Lagers, including “Sword Swallower” and “Albino Python”. Be sure to see the seasonally available brews such as “Freaktoberfeast” and “Human Blockhead”. Look for the freaks on the label at World Market, Whole Foods and fine beer retailers near you. A portion of its proceeds directly benefits Coney Island USA, a 501(c)3 Non-Profit.
And by Shocked & Amazed! Magazine, the planet’s only periodical dedicated to the novelty and variety performing arts, now in its 15th year of publication. Available at booksellers, comic book shops and fine tattoo parlours near you. Shocked & Amazed! Magazine– Ask for it by name!
Not so very long ago there was a time when there was a thing known as the midnight show. I don’t mean Rocky Horror Picture Show, but the strange entertainment that it was homage to…. The Spook Show experience! A midnight horror feature complete with a live stage show of magic, torture acts and tableaus designed to “Scare the Yell Right Out of You”!
It was a simpler time where monsters ghosts and zombies were scary enough as ideas and not computer generated special effects. The craft of arts and performers were enough– or at least enough to sell a ticket.
This week we travel to Gibsonton, Florida to visit Magician Roy Huston who worked with the Baker Ghost Shows and produced his own series of spook shows traveling around the country scaring kids who really really deserved it.
Working in almost every kind of live entertainment genre from the circus to burlesque, founding a major touring magic production company, and even appearing in the cult films of Hershel Gordon Lewis, Roy Huston’s unequaled career in performing arts makes him an authentic counter cultural American treasure.
As always we want your comments, feedback and suggestions for guests. You can write to the show at alex@nationalpodcastingcompany.com.
Next time on Conjurers Carnies & Collectors direct from Baltimore, Maryland, the hairdo capitol of the world, to speak with author and publisher James Taylor of Shocked & Amazed! Magazine. James tell us about the way the show business was and what it ain’t no more…..
