Conjurers, Carnies & Collectors is made possible by a grant from Shmaltz Brewing Company, makers of Coney Island Lagers, including “Sword Swallower” and “Albino Python”. Be sure to see the seasonally available brews such as “Freaktoberfeast” and “Human Blockhead”. Look for the freaks on the label at World Market, Whole Foods and fine beer retailers near you. A portion of its proceeds directly benefits Coney Island USA, a 501(c)3 Non-Profit.
And by Shocked & Amazed! Magazine, the planet’s only periodical dedicated to the novelty and variety performing arts, now in its 15th year of publication. Available at booksellers, comic book shops and fine tattoo parlours near you. Shocked & Amazed! Magazine — Ask for it by name!
Host Alex Kensington writes:
I first saw silent movie footage of a Spirit Cabinet routine several years ago and was of course intrigued. The curtain was being whipped back and forth by an assistant, while the Somnambulistic Medium within was bound by ropes. Yet all sorts of miracles were occurring, object tossed about and over the cabinet’s edge when ever the curtain was drawn. No matter how fast the Assistant yanked back the curtain, The Medium was still found to be tied unmoved and unconscious. Those naughty spirits he called forth were to blame for all the hijinks. Man, it was cool…. And so is the modern practitioner Chicagoan actor and Magician David Parr.
We return again to the City of Big Shoulders, and meet David Parr, who with his partner P.T. Murphy, co-stars and produces The Magic Cabaret at the Green House Theatre Center– Chicago’s weekly presentation of magic, spiritualism and classic seance effects and a wide variety of amazing guest performers. So join me now in the lovely Lincoln Park neighborhood on Chicago’s near north side, on the tree lined streets of classic brick bungalows as we speak with Magician and Actor David Parr.
The Magic Cabaret is Wednesdays at 7:30 at the Greenhouse Theater Center 2257 North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. No one under 13 is admitted so you know its gotta be cool. Chicago Reader theater critic Kerry Reid writes: Low on hokum and high on thoughtfulness, this shows magic to its best advantage, up close and personal.
